It is hard to believe it has been a year since we started this project. It seemed only right to focus as much attention as possible on Veterans since that is the reason I decided to run for office. If my only accomplishment is providing volunteers and/or donations to these worthy causes, I consider it an overwhelming success. As we wrap up the year, take a look back at any one of those in which you may feel moved by and give a little. This is the time of year where each becomes infinitely more important than any one thing we do alone.
Thanks to everyone here in the "netroots" community and the greatest campaign manager that money didn't buy; we all can be happy with our efforts. Thanks for supporting us and sticking with us through the ups and downs.
Hopefully, we can stop spending billions of dollars to elect our representatives and focus that money back on the people who need it.
All of us need to collectively put our heads together and start thinking of ways to capitalize on the momentum. In some races, the money spent was worth it and some it just outright backfired on us. It is not about the money it is about message.
Our campaign is living proof of that:
We raised less than $30,000 but still managed to make Barton run a "re-election" campaign this year.
Our major accomplishments:

Endorsed by SecureUS
Endorsed by VETPAC
Endorsed by Esquire magazine

We forced Barton to update both his campaign website and his House website
We did not have a full time "office" or "paid" staff - it was all done virtually and with volunteers
The numbers above speak for themselves - we chipped away at his base, and then some...

As a Veteran, I chose to highlight a charity every month starting on Veterans Day last month. You can check here for our first or second entries or read some of our others. Please consider giving to one or all of them on behalf of Veterans everywhere.
There are 24.7 million Veterans living in the United States. Nearly 23 percent of homeless adults are Veterans and many more Veterans who live in poverty are at risk for becoming homeless. While the war continues in Iraq, many more families are left behind without the help they need when soldiers are deployed or killed in the line of duty. As part of our continued effort to further Veterans causes, we will be highlighting a new Veterans charity in the top spot on our blog page every thirty days for the next year.

"...More than 50% of the legislation that reaches the House floor for a vote passes through this committee, which has jurisdiction over such important issues as energy, healthcare, trade, consumer protection, and telecommunications..."Sincerely,
Joe Barton
Member of Congress
I am taking on Joe Barton, the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the most powerful members of Congress and one of the worst enemies of average American taxpayer.
I have been asked many times since starting this campaign, why I am running for Congress. The answer has many parts.
Brought to you link-free because, well, there is just so much crap I could link to and cross posted at TexasKos
YearlyKos was a defining moment for me, in more ways than one. I came back from YK even more charged up than ever, but at the same time, even more disgusted in the fundraising process. I sat in the audience while Dean addressed us and told us that we are doing important work and that he needed us - needed the Netroots to keep fighting and needed more of us to run for office. Well, I am doing both fighting and running and this is my link-free diary.

David T. Harris, TX-06Today is the "official" 3 year anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, yet my opponent still hasn't even acknowledged the importance of supporting our troops during his "re-election" campaign. Over 2,300 soldiers have been killed in action, countless others wounded, and a growing insurgency is gripping the Iraqi countryside and Joe Barton refuses to see the reality of the situation there and here in America.

A FOLLOW ME TO DC community project
For any one that has followed my out-of-the-box campaign thus far, I welcome you to become familiar with our community service efforts. It is difficult running for office for anyone but I was certain that I would use the public forum, while available, to continue something that our family believes wholeheartedly in our own lives every day. If everyone volunteered an hour a week or contributed $20 a month to a charity, I am confident it would change the world.
